Top 10 Things to do in Salzburg Region in Spring and Autumn

  • by
Hallstadt

Spring and autumn are fantastic times of the year to visit us in the Hochkönig. Haus Schneeberg, Holiday apartments in Mühlbach am Hochkönig, is situated in the middle of the Salzburg region, and there are many attractions to see in the area.  Here are our top 10 things to do, and places that you can visit in spring and autumn. Some are open all year around.

The major sights can get very busy over the peak summer period, so spring or autumn are great times of year to avoid the crowds! As soon as the snow goes, you can start hiking and biking in the area, and this continues up to early December. In autumn, the colours are spectacular, and well worth a visit for that alone!

Hallstadt

Hallstadt

Hallstadt is UNESCO heritage, and it is so spectacular that even the Chinese have created a copy of the ancient salt mine village. The village is built into the hill surrounding lake Hallstadt, and the setting is truly breathtaking! Wander the streets of the old village, and buy the local produce and art, take a boat trip on the lake, take the funicular to the top of the salt mine entrance, and visit the Sky Walk and the salt mines. There is everything for a full day out! Open all year round, and in December there is also the Christmas market to explore!

Salzburg City

2. Salzburg City and Salzburg Altstadt (old town)

Visit Mozart’s birthplace, and see the beautiful sights in Salzburg including Hohensalzburg Fortress, the Dom (Cathedral), Mirabell Palace and gardens, and Hellbrun Palace with it’s trick fountains. Wander the streets of the old town, take a break for coffee and cake, visit the Stiegl factory and sample the local beer, open all year!

From the 22nd November, the Christkindl market opens and the city truly comes alive with carol singing, market stalls, and a fantastic ambience!

If you want to see Salzburg on foot and learn more about this city full of culture, you can sign up for a Free walking tour.

3. Hohenwerfen castle

Towering on a rock above Werfen, the mediaeval castle is well worth a visit. You can walk up the hill, or take a funicular, and take a tour around the castle, and watch the falconry show. Open from the end of March until early November, and there are some special opening days in December for a Christmas market.

Eisriesenwelt

4. Eisriesenwelt, Werfen

The largest ice caves in the World! Spend half a day visiting this fantastic place. You take the cable car up the mountain, and a 20 minute walk later you find the entrance to the cave. Experience the blast as you enter the cave, and follow your guide up the many steps and paths. You will need sturdy shoes and warm clothes for this trip! Open 1st May till end October

Koenigsee

5. Königssee and Eagles nest

Head over to Germany for the day, and visit the beautiful Königssee, Berchtesgarten. Take the boat trip to the far end of the lake, hear the bugel echo, and walk to Obersee, and the waterfall at the end of the valley. On the way back if you have time, stop off to see the Eagle’s Nest, one of the few undamaged monuments of the Hilter era. The boats run all year around, except when the lake is frozen. Eagle’s Nest is open mid May till mid October.

Grossglocknerstrasse

6. Grossglockner Alpine Road

Drive the windy road up towards the Grossglockner, Austria’s highest mountain and enjoy lots of panoramic views and information stops on the way. Reach the road summit at just over 2500m, park up, and take a hike / stroll, take photographs, see the marmots and take in the breathtaking views! Best to go on a sunny day to make the most of the views. Visit early May and see how many meters of snow they had to snowplough through to clear the road! Open from early May till early November.

Krimmler waterfall

7. Krimml waterfall and Mittersill National Park World

The highest waterfalls in Austria, and the 5th highest in the world, with a drop of 380m, one of the world’s most impressive natural spectacles. Walk the 4km waterfall trail and visit the 3 stages of the waterfall with various vantage points. Mittersill National Park is just down the road, with the highlights being the Eagle’s Flight Panorama, the 3D computer animation including the formation of the ´Window on the Tauern´, the Avalanche-Waterfall Dome, and the World of Glaciers. Entrance is free to the Mittersill National Park with the Hochkönig Card. Krimml waterfall is open late April till end Oct, and the National Park World is open all year.

8. Hallein Salt mines

Thermal spa

10. Spas in Salzburg (Thermen)

There are a number of Thermen (Spas) in the area to chill and relax if you fancy a day /evening off sightseeing, or the weather is not so great. There are 2 spas in the Gastein valley, one in Golling, and one in Altenmarkt, all within about 30 – 45 minutes drive. They have separate areas for families so if you have children with you, you can enjoy the slides and whirlpools and wave pool, and separate sauna areas, which are only allowed for over 16’s, and have a wealth of choice of different saunas and steam rooms. Our favourite is Alpentherme in Bad Hofgastein, with stunning views and great outdoor pool areas. Open all year!
