Austria is famous for it’s Christmas markets.  It is not just the festive music, the festive lights, and stalls selling glittering Christmas products that draws people to them.  It is also the ambiance, the smells of the local food on sale for takeaway in the stalls, the Glühwein with friends, and of course the carol singing.

And Salzburg is an amazing backdrop for Christmas markets, with it’s wintery, snowy scenes.  You will of course have to wrap up warm as most of the markets are all outdoors.

There are a number of Christmas markets in and around Salzburg, here are a few of the favourites for 2023!

The Hallein Christmas market takes place in the Alte Saline, the old saltwoks building, one of the historically relevant buildings in Hallein that was closed down in 1989 after more than 150 years.

There are still many interesting details from the past to admire in the Old Saltworks. For example, a small amount of the fine salt is still stored in the entrance area. Filled with our Christmas decorations, these historic, impressive old walls take on a unique aura. Even if there is no snow, it looks like a snowy scene!

All stands are under cover; This means the entire market is weatherproof. Let yourself be surprised, enjoy the entertaining supporting program or take advantage of the rare opportunity to take a tour of the salt pans and visit the unique brewing pan.
